What and Why?
Skógafoss is a waterfall of the Skógá River, which plunges 60 metres into the depths and creates over a width of 25 metres a white veil of water over the green cliffs of the former south coast of Iceland. As you can stand right in front of it, you can feel the size and power of the water masses. On the right-hand side of Skógafoss, a staircase leads up to an observation platform right next to the edge of the falls. The waterfall, which is already visible from the ring road, is fascinating in summer due to the contrast with the green landscape and the lupine fields in purple bloom. Many seabirds breed in the cliffs during the summer. In winter, however, it can also impress with its unique ice formations. With a bit of luck, the aurora will turn your visit into an unforgettable experience.

Where is it?
Skogafoss is located in the south of Iceland near the village of Skógar in the municipality of Rangárþing eystra below Eyjafjallajökull.

How to get there?
Skogafoss is easily reached by car from Reykjavík in just over two hours. A four-wheel drive vehicle is not necessary in summer. You can also travel by bus no. 51. However, the bus journey from Reykjavík takes just under 4 hours and you have to change buses twice.

When to go?
As Skógafoss is located directly on Ring Road 1, it is accessible all year round. As usual, it is advisable to avoid the peak times for Iceland’s easily accessible sights. A visit very early in the morning or late in the evening is therefore highly recommended.

Who can visit?
A visit is possible for almost everyone. There is a car park in front of the waterfall, from where you can reach it in just a one minute walk.

The famous trekking trail, Laugavegur, begins on the eastern side of the waterfall, leading up to the Fimmvörðuháls pass and onwards via Þórsmörk to Landmannalaugar.
